I watched How cognitive surplus will change the world” by Clay Shirky. It was about how the population will be able to help the world by sharing our brain power. It also talks about Ushahidi which Clay Shirky is a huge supporter of because everyone in the world can contribute. Ushahidi helped Haiti recover from the earth quack and has done many other very helpful things in the world. This effects me because I didn't really know how fast we were advancing in technology and it amazes me, also now i know that even I will be able to change the world and it will be able to help me. This effects education because soon we will be taught how to do this kind of thing in school and that isn't to far away. This effects the world because it is about how cognitive surplus will change every life and every country in the world.

I read "Adams City High locked down after ammunition found", about how Adams City High School was locked down all day as Commerce City police searched the school for a gun. They found a loaded magazine for a pistol and the school was in lock down the entire school day. although they claimed that no weapons were found it is still horrible news that a high school student was found with a weapon. This effects me because i thought Columbine would have put a message in out heads that this kind of crime always turns out as a tragedy that no one will forget or forgive. This effects education because these kinds of things are effecting school, Adams City high School was locked down all day so they wasted hours of learning. This effects the world because every school shooting is world news and frankly Columbine made Colorado look kind of bad so luckily we found the magazine before something bad could have happened.

PLN 21

I watched the video Changing Education Paradigms” by RSA Animate. it was about how many Kids aren't relying on education as much as we maybe should be, and how our education system is falling apart. It talked about how the base of education is still the same as it was one hundred years ago, and since the world is always changing this might not be a good thing. This effects me because i know i don't rely on education as much as i should but i am working on it. This effects education because i think the school board needs to rethink how to make things more interesting. This effects the world because we will be leading this country soon, and I know I don't want sloppy, lazy people running it.

I read "More Consistent anti-bullying Program Urged for Colorado" by Jessica Fender, about how Colorado is trying to help prevent bullying in schools. I see people getting bullied so much that i am pretty much used to it which is a horrible thing. In a recent poll 77% of students said that they had been bullied before and 14 % said that they had been physically abused. Its good that Colorado is starting this program but i think it should have happened earlier due to that fact that many kids have committed suicide because of bullying. This effects me because i see bullying everyday and i would like to go to school and not have to see that kind of thing happening. This effects education because It is happening in every school and it is partly the school boards responsibility to teach us how to peacefully live together. This effects the world because it is happening everywhere. In every town and school bullying is a big problem which needs to be fixed.

I read Lost in Electronica” By George F. Will. It is about how kids are so consumed by electronics that they are hardly in reality sometimes. He also talks about how we are basically technology addicts, and I agree. I couldn't go more than a day without my phone and computer but that just shows how much we have changed. When my parents talk about their youth they don't talk about all of the great nights the were searching stuff on the Internet, they talk about how they were always working on something and doing something productive. This effects me because because it took me about half an hour to write this PLN when it should taken half as long, which shows how short my attention span is. This effects education because soon kids aren't going to be able to get any work done because their attention is always on something else. This effects the world because the farther we advance our technology the more easily our focus with be swayed and technology is all around us and is only spreading more.

I read "Police investigating high school pot Ponzi scheme" on the Denver post blog. About high school students from Cherry Creek and Regis high school that thought they were investing in a medical marijuana dispensary. So far two students are suspects, one is 16 years old and the other is 17 years old. The police said that it is very unusual for juveniles to be involved in these kinds of scandals especially because they have to give thousands of dollars to invest in it. This effects me because now i know that this kind of thing can happen to high schoolers and i know i don't want to be involved in it. This effects education because it shows that even people from prestigious school can be involved in it. This effects the world because people are taking advantage of everyone even high school students and I'm sure this is happening ever where.

I read "What if?" by Karl Fisch, about how our school is so against electronics like phones and mp3 players during class even though we would be able to pass the class without electronics. He also talks about how over generalized electronic devices is, that means that even watches not allowed in the classroom. This effects me because everyday i use computers in class and if we weren't aloud to i would be overloaded with homework and sometimes we use our mp3's for background music and personally music helps me concentrate. This effects education because it is nit right to do this and they should know that. This effects the world because I'm sure this kind of thing is happening everywhere and if they make it so no electronics are aloud in class then class would get a lot harder and many grades would drop.

I read "Man facing foreclosure surrenders to SWAT team inside Jefferson County home" on the Denver post blog about a man that has been asked to leave his house for the past month and when the police got a warrant he barricaded himself into his house forcing the SWAT team to break in and arrest him. This effects me because the economy is bad and there is always a chance my parents could loose their jobs which would be devastating. This effects education because it is a great example of how bad our economy is and jobs sat schools are being cut and they are getting rid of art and music programs to save money. This effects the world because if a swat team had to be called when a man traps himself in his house due to recession what will happen all over the world if it were to get worse and crazier things than this started to happen.

In Alfie Kohn’s "School’s would be great if it weren’t for kids", it talks about how students are to blame for doing bad in school and not the teachers. Although it can be the teachers fault if they don't teach the students what they need to succeed. This effects me because i don't want to fail and if i do i wont have a fall back and no one to blame but my self. This effects education because we all need an education but some people don't take advantage of it and it will come back to haunt those who don't. This effects the world because very soon we Will be running this earth and I know I wont want a bunch of sloppy uneducated people trying to run it. We can do well in school if we are willing to take the time but there will always be slackers and there will always be successors.

I read "DNA ties convict to two 1990s sexual assaults" by Kirk Mitchell. It was about a man that committed two crimes over 15 years ago is now being tried because they found DNA ties linking the two crimes. This effects me because there are many ad people int eh world that will hurt or kill someone for no reason which scares me a little bit, also i didn't know that we could get DNA evidence that is that old which means that we will soon be able to convict people with DNA evidence, that committed the crime or 30 years ago. This effects education because a few people will become criminals and a some people will be very successful, but it is our schools responsibility to teach us how to live peacefully together as a society. This helps the world because hopefully people will realize that its nearly impossible to get a way will a crime and, the crime rate might lower significantly.

I read "Googly Advice to Students: Major in Learning" by Jonathan Rosenberg. It was about what skills different jobs are looking for in the employees they want to attend such as analytical reasoning, communication skills, a willingness to experiment, a team player, and passion and leadership. I need to grow in these subjects in order to be successful. This effects me because i want to get a good job and have all of the skills to do so. This effects education because it makes kids realize what they need to know to succeed. This effects the world because we will soon be the leaders of this world and in order to lead a good happy world we will need to be exceptional in theses subjects. Will the hole our country has dug itself into I will need to get all that I can out of my education so that if i can, help us grow as a country.

I read "Woman who ripped off Cub Scouts"popcorn fund gets a taste of jail" by Howard Pankratz. It was about a woman who stole $11,000 from an Evergreen Cub Scout troop was sentenced to 15 months probation and four weekends in jail. This effects me because i didn't realize how desperate people were getting that they would steal large amounts of money from a cub scout troop that is trying to benefit the community. This effects the world because the economy isn't great and alot of people are in debt and will do almost anything to pull them selves out, which means that there are many more people in the world that would do something like this.

I watch "2020 Vision" by Carl Fisch. it was about how he thinks the world will be in the year 2020. It is interesting to think about how society will have changed from now till then. I also like how he told about it like he was actually in the future. This effects me because if any of this is true it will most likely have an influence on me in one way or another. This effects education because there were many things he talked about with education like how all lessons will be sold as podcasts which would be very helpful to me because i sometimes have a short attention span. This effects the world because all of his predictions are about how the world will be in the future and the changes it will make.

I read "Rapper T.I. arrested on machine gun charges" on the CNN blog. T.I. has been arrested many times and once for machine gun charges and is a convicted felon. His body guard went informant and they found three machine guns and two silencers on the rapper. T.I. provided his bodyguard $12,000 to get him the weapons. This effects me because i have many role models and if something like this happened to them I would loose my admiration for them. This effects education because many students looked up to him and still do and if any of them think its okay to have guns and they bring one to school something can go horribly wrong. this effects the world because there are many other people out there like T.I. which shows that the world can be a very dangerous place.

In the article “Rigor Redefined” by Tony Wagner, he talks about jobs today and how it is getting harder and harder to get a job after graduating from college. He also talks about how some students are not learning what the need to succeed in school. Schools need to be more interactive with the learning that goes on and teachers need to get the students involved with what they’re learning to gain these traits. This effects me because I am a student and I need to make sure that I am getting what i need from my education to succeed. This effects educations because our schools need to make sure that they are teaching us to be philanthropists because the rest is up to us. This effects the world because we are the future, and if we are not getting the right skills we need from school then our world could get progressively worse. Education and learning is a huge part of every ones lives and if plays a huge part in determining our jobs so we need to make sure that we are getting everything we possibly can from this world.

I read " Bernie Cardell Speaks out on gay suicides" by John Moore, it is about how many teenagers are killing them self's due to their insecurities about the way they are. In 2006 according to the youth risk survey homosexuals are 4 times more likely to commit suicide than the heterosexual people around them. This effects me because i didn't realize that this was still a critical issue today. This effect education because it is the board of educations partial responsibility to teach non bullying and to teach us how to live in a society together. This effects the world because this is happening all over the world and same sex marriage is still illegal in many states which i don't understand, i thought we were passed this issue. We don't have different bathrooms for different races anymore so i don't understand how some people are so against the idea of same sex marriage.

I read "In Focus: Ground Zero" by Mary Altaffer from the Denver Post subscription. It is about how many people walk by ground zero everyday and hardly pay any attention it now that new construction is going on there. It also talks about how the Islamic community wants to build a mosque down the street from ground zero. This makes me wonder why they would do this because it could bring so much more pain to the families that lost someone in 9/11 but also i think that it would be a good thing so that the Islamics could almost reestablish their reputation as a non violent, non-terrorist religion. It effects education because we are taught about the amendments to the constitution and in the first amendment it gives us the right to religion, so this would be practicing that right. It effects the world because the mosque is big news right now in the world to whether people think that the Islams should built it or not. I though that this was a great article and really makes you think.

I read the article "Giant-pumpkin growing brothers prepare for family-friendly festival and weigh-off" from the Denver Post subscription. It is about two brothers that are growing a 1000+ pound pumpkin for a contest here in Colorado. In order to get this big it has to grow at least 30 pounds a day. This matters to me because it made me realize how we are moving forward and getting more advanced in almost everything from technology to agriculture. This matters to education because people are actually learning and figuring out how to do things like this. This matters to the world by if we can get that big of pumpkins then we could probably make other fruits and vegetables that big which will change prices and quantities of food, and a lot of food would go to waste in the end. I thought this article was both informational and a little surreal.

I watched "Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us" by Mike Wesch. It was about how much easier the web is to use then anything else, he made a four minute video into something much more then it actually is. It matters to me because i do a lot of typing and have never thought about how changeable typing is compared to writing on paper, also it has changed the way i will write for the rest of my life. It matters to education because soon no one will be writing, it will all be on a computer and people might eventually forget how to write and kids in the next generation wont even understand the concept of why we would ever write something without a computer.because they are so much more use to pressing buttons then pen on paper. It matters to the world because technology keeps improving and it has already have a huge impact on the world so soon everything will be online, there will be no newspapers or even books, everything will be done on the computer which frightens me a little bit.

"Footprints In The Digital Age" by Will Richardson is about how posting personal things on the internet good and bad can define our futures. He talks about how what future schools and jobs are going to base us off of is what kinds of posts we have online, and how we need to be careful of what we post on our blogs because we only want A+ work and not even C work on it. If you post something rude or disgusting online and a school sees it they will automatically choose the A+ student over you. 80% of kids use the internet daily which means that they are most likely posting things and some which could be rude so some kids have already ruined their chances of getting the job they want or getting into that school they have always wanted to go to just by posting something online.

The video "A Vision of Students" by Mike Wesch really makes you think about what we learn in school and how it is relevant to your life and how we will integrate our school knowledge into our lives. The video has interesting facts in it like how students will spend hundreds of dollars on textbooks and never even open most of them, and one person said that only 18% of her teachers know her name, which sounds crazy now since all of my teachers know my name but when your class is usually made up of over 100 students it will probably sound like a pretty big percentage. These things matter to me because i want to do as well as i can in school and get to know my teachers well but it seems like that might be hard after watching this. It is interesting because it is matters to education because it is about how education effects us and how it play a major role in our lives. It matters to the world because we are the future and we will be based off of our education for the most part.
